Samsung Galaxy S24+ long-term review – AI Companion Settles In

We’ve had our Samsung Galaxy S24+ review for months now, using it for much of that time as our daily driver. TechStomper’s initial review of Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus lauded the AI implementation, as well as the robust design and raw power. And since then, we’ve developed the AI habit, or rather our AI companion has settled in.

Samsung AI has transformed our workday. Whether its taking calls where we wouldn’t have been able to previously, compiling neat summaries from vast documents, or translating audio, a little patience and allowing the AI into our life went a long way.

Still Stunning

Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus boasts an aluminium frame with four rounded corners in an otherwise ‘friendly box’ design defined by its straight edges. Our Marble Grey review model has a pale grey frosted glass rear, interrupted only by three large lenses of the same colour and a solitary, gloss-etched Samsung logo.

Samsung Galaxy S24+ minimalistic design exudes elegance. Our Marble Grey review unit’s combination of pale grey, brushed silver, and the dark display creates a visually harmonious balance. And, this simple design and pleasant balance has worn well over our months with Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus.

The AMOLED 2x display is vibrant, bright and detailed. 1,440 x 3,120 pixels crammed into a screen size of 6.7 inches presents a sharp facade. The aspect ratio of 19.5:9 fills the front of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus with little in the way of bezels all-round.

Samsung Galaxy series style evolution

The AMOLED 2x display of Samsung Galaxy S24+ also delivers a maximum brightness 2,600 nits. This, combined with an anti-glare and anti-reflective coating, make the Galaxy S24 Plus usable in all conditions, even in direct sunlight. And, the reliability of the display has come in handy in the long term. Especially as spring rolled in and brought some sunshine with which to truly test the display.

Samsung Galaxy S24+ Daily Driver Experience

Samsung Galaxy S24+ is equipped with their proprietary Exynos 2400 chipset in Europe and its domestic market. The chipset and its 12GB RAM effortlessly has handled any non-AI task or application we used over our months with Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus. The device has also slayed multiple apps at a canter.

Samsung Galaxy S24+ also showcases some neat UI and menu transitions, along with other visual effects, as part of the One UI 6.1 (Android 14), all while maintaining seamless performance.

Additionally, the device is capable of running the most intensive AAA 3D games smoothly. There’s also an option to set the device to prioritise gaming, allocating all necessary resources and bandwidth to ensure quick and responsive gameplay.

Easy AI Image Edits

Samsung Galaxy S24+ offers an Edit Suggestion feature that recommends appropriate adjustments for each photo. By activating the Samsung Galaxy AI Generative Edit in the settings, you can complete parts of an image’s background using this technology.

Samsung AI has the capability to autonomously correct the framing of skewed shots, recommend modifications in tone or white balance, and focus shots on the intended subject.

And in the long-term, Samsung AI and ProVisual Suite have proven its worth with product shots or personal shots to share with friends and family.

Little fixes that can prevent distractions, like shadows or reflections, become a habit, saving photos that otherwise would have lost some impact, or worse, been binned.

Image Remaster

Samsung AI also offers ‘Remaster’ feature that can enhance any image in the Gallery. The Remaster function does so by reducing noise and restoring details that are missing in lower-resolution images. Its more sophisticated functions even permit the repositioning of objects or subjects within the image.

AI also possesses the ability to improve videos in your Gallery. One cool trick is Instant Slow-Mo, which creates extra frames to decelerate fast-paced actions within scenes. Although Instant Slow-Mo works best with brightly lit clips, it can still produce remarkable results from almost any video in your Gallery.

You can choose from four playback speeds, dropping your preferred speed anywhere along the timeline. And this can create some mind-bending videos, with surprising ease. This ease encourages experimentation, and like the little image edits, we found ourselves tinkering more and more with these tricks as we developed the habit.

Samsung AI Generative Edit

It’s worth nothing that when a Galaxy S24 series device employs generative AI for image modification, a watermark is embedded in both the image and its metadata. These serve as near-permanent markers of AI alteration.

The ease with with which Samsung AI’s bag of tricks can be employed is probably more impressive than the results. Handy edits, like shadow or reflection removal, are one-click affairs. The edge marking for more involved edits also works almost every time, so these operations are generally streamlined.

Stunning Stills

The tri-lens setup of Samsung Galaxy S24+ has proven practically infallible over our months with the device. The camera experience of Galaxy S24 series is enhanced greatly by ProVisual Engine, a broad collection of AI and non-AI tools to aid in setting up the perfect shot. Pro Visual Engine also facilitates a suite of tools for post-capture editing.

Nightography sees more detail captures in shorter shots. There’s also less blur when shooting in low light with an unsteady hand, or fleeting subject. Similarly, action shots in ideal light capture greater detail with less motion blur apparent on moving subjects.

While we would have liked more than 3x optical zoom via the 10MP telephoto lens, the hybrid zoom feature negates the relatively small 3x telephoto zoom.

Samsung S24+ hybrid zoom can rival a native optical zoom in aesthetic quality when the lighting is right and the subject is suitable. Although there is a loss of finer detail, it is difficult to discern the use of hybrid zoom.

A moderate user will probably get to bed on day two on a single charge of Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus. The 4,900mAh battery and some intelligent power management give the device plenty of stamina to go with its raw processing grunt.

S24+ Stamina and Charging

Samsung Galaxy S24+ has proved itself highly reliable over our months with the device. The software battery management and Galaxy S24 Plus’ large 4,900mAh combine to deliver a device that will last even the most intense of workdays.

For moderate users, like ourselves on most days, Samsung Galaxy S24+ will very often make it to bedtime on day two. Notably, streaming video and high-bitrate audio eats less battery than other devices, and Galaxy S24+ can strean for hours at a time without taking massive chunks of battery. This was a lifesaver on long trips and heavier workdays.

45W wired is not a huge figure. However, just over one hour to charge from 0-100% it’s still a convenient recharging process. And, 0-65% in 30 minutes is perfect for a last-moment charge, especially given the stamina of Samsung Galaxy S24+.

Samsung Galaxy S24+ also adheres to the PD3.0 charging standard, which allows different chargers from the various brands to charge devices at higher speeds. PD3.0 compatibility is an underrated quality of life bump.

No longer did we have to find a particular charger just to charge at convenient speeds. And again, this feature became more and more valued over our months with Samsung Galaxy S24+.
