OPPO Reno8 Pro first impressions – Sub-Premium Luxury in Design

OPPO Reno8 Series has launched across Europe following their August 31st Paris show. TechStomper has picked up their OPPO Reno8 Pro and formed some first impressions. Paris is a fitting backdrop for OPPO Reno8 Series European launch.

The French capital was the venue from where OPPO formally entered the European market and launched their Reno series in 2018.

It’s also fitting that such a handset with such bold and elegant design should launch at one of haute couture‘s Big Four. OPPO Reno8 Pro is striking in a way usually reserved for premium devices.

The contrast of flowing corners, large round lenses and sharp lines offer an ultra-modern look. The mix of shapes and macro details manages to be minimal but visually interesting.

The chamfered detailing is a nice premium touch to soften the monolithic design. How this chamfered edge rises to form the outer boundary of the lens island is another wonderful detail that harmonises the design elements.

The large lens island is framed by that rising chamfer and moulded micro-arc offering a piece of pop-art as a visual centrepiece. The lens island also features two round corners and two sharp corners, the matching cuts sitting opposite each other on the arrangement.

OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G Glazed Black MariSilicon

OPPO Reno8 Pro is svelte at just 7.67mm thick and weighs 183g. It feels solid in the hand and, despite the flat front and rear, it’s quite easy to hold.

That big bright screen is wrapped in a ‘Glazed Green’ and ‘Glazed Black’. Our review ‘Glazed Black’ review model is the more muted of the pair.

OPPO Reno8 Pro Battery and Charging

Reno8 and Reno8 Pro both feature OPPO’s innovative Battery Health Engine which they say allows the device to reach 1,600 charging cycles with 80% of its battery capacity remaining, around twice the current average of 800 cycles.

This 1,600 charging cycles figures mean you can charge your OPPO Reno8 Pro once per day for over four years and still have four-fifths of your original battery capacity intact.

OPPO Reno8 Pro also features the company’s latest 80W SuperVOOC wired charging as seen on OPPO Find X5 and Find X5 Pro. With the supplied charger, users can charge from 0 to 50% in around 10 minutes, and from 0-100% in around 30 minutes.

The 6.7″ AMOLED display features a refresh rate up to 120Hz with a impressive brightness helping the 10-bit (1bn) colour pop.

Reno8 smartphone ColorOS 12.1

OPPO Reno8 Pro features a gaming mode brings the touchscreen polling rate to a responsive 1,000Hz. It’s also optimised for high-end 3D mobile gaming.

That smooth refresh rate, the searing brightness with deep contrast, and the 10-bit colour give OPPO Reno8’s display a premium look to match its exterior.

Video Options

Reno8 Pro features hardware similar to the well-received Find X5 Series, including a Sony IMX766 and OPPO. Reno8 Pro comes with Find X5 series house-developed imaging NPU, MariSilicon X and boasts a 4K Ultra night video mode. The device’s all-round night video capture is impressive going off our early tests.

The device is capable of shooting at 960 frames per second for ultra-slow motion capture as shooting time-lapse video.

A Sense of Selfie

OPPO Reno8 Pro features a sweet selfie suite. The device leverages a large front-facing 32MP Sony IMX709 RGBW sensor and its imaging software and AI to automatically adjust to the number of participants in your selfie.
