Huawei P40 Lite 5G First Impressions

With Huawei P40 series of phones winning worldwide acclaim for their design and performance, it’s the turn of their little brother, Huawei P40 Lite 5G, to unveil itself to the world. What Huawei have always done with their Lite series of phones is give users a premium-feeling experience without the price.

Huawei P40 Lite 5G is no different in that it tries – and in many ways does – give you that premium experience and feel while not destroying your bank balance. Just from the overall feel in hand, Huawei P40 Lite 5G goes further than previous iterations to get you close to that flagship offering.

But there’s only so much you can pack into a phone that’s a little less than half the price of their flagship range of P40 devices.  Sure, you don’t get the best screen or a top of the range chipset, but the performance and feel are more than decent.

Premium-ish Feeling

The first thing that I noticed when holding the phone was its size. Having just reviewed the beastly Nokia 8.3 5G, it was great to have a that was easy to hold and use in one hand. The rear of the P40 Lite 5g is glass, but it does have an almost plastic sort of feel to it.

It’s clear that a lot of work went into the design and look of the phone. The bezels around the screen aren’t a major issue and even the little chinstrap on the bottom is smaller than other phones I’ve used. With a FULL HD+ resolution, text and images look nice and sharp.

It’s also one of, if not the first, Lite edition of a flagship that has come 5G capability thanks to Huawei’s in-house Kirin 820 processor. Now, with all of Irelands major networks providing 5G plans, it makes a lot of sense to invest in a 5G device.

Like the P40 flagship series, Huawei again uses a Leica quad-camera setup on the rear of the phone with the 64MP sensor the main attraction.  Just a single punch hole camera is on the top left of the Full HD+ LCD screen. I much the single lens to a pill-shaped one that takes up too much real estate.

Of course, unfortunately, with Huawei devices, Google Play is no longer available. However, they’ve done a great job of investing in their own app store with the vast majority of big apps like Whatsapp and the like, all available. It’s only a minor inconvenience at this point. Who knows what will happen after November 3.

Like all Huawei phones, the OS is EMUI and is based on Android 10. With 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage – which is expandable up to 256GB – performance is smooth even with multiple apps and tabs open. A beefy 4000 mAh battery should carry you through the day, but if not, you get a 40 watt Huawei SuperCharger included.
