Google Ireland also shared some mind-blowing facts on just how much of a game-changer Maps has been for the planet since its launch in 2004.
In 2024, Google Maps provided directions covering a total of 1 trillion kilometres. To put this into perspective, this distance is equivalent to the Earth orbiting the sun over a thousand times. There are 250 million businesses and places on Google Maps. If you were to visit one of these places every hour without sleeping, it would take you more than 28,500 years to get through this list.
There are 500 million users who contribute information like reviews, photos, ratings, and driving disruptions to Google Maps per year. A vertical stack of 500 million pieces of paper would be 50km high. There are 100 million updates made to the map each day. That means that in the time it took to read this sentence, the map was updated 10,000 times.
