With the PS5 release almost upon us, TechStomper thought that now would be the perfect time to tell you which PS4 games will be getting free upgrades for PS5.
PlayStation’s strategy differs quite significantly when compared with that of Xbox. Microsoft has been very open with their upgrade strategy with Smart Delivery making sure you play the best version of your game on your system of choice.
Meanwhile, PlayStation has mostly left it up to third-party developers to provide patches for current-gen games. There has also been no word on patches for the likes of Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II.
Which Games Are Getting the Free PS4 to PS5 Upgrade??
First up we have Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. In order to get the PS5 version, you’ll have to pay €70 to get the cross-gen edition which includes both PS4 and PS5 versions. A separate version is sold for €60 but that does not include the next-gen edition.
Next up is Assassins Creed Valhalla. You’ll definitely want to upgrade to the PS5 as it has been confirmed that AC Valhalla will run in native 4K 60FPS on PS5, compared to 1080p 30fps on PS4. Much faster loading times and higher quality effects will be added to the PS5 version,
Owners of Borderlands 3 will enjoy a free upgrade to PS5 with improved multiplayer options and native 4K 60fps.
505 games really haven’t done anything for their popularity since they revealed their next-gen path for Control. You can only get the free PS5 edition if you buy the Control Ultimate edition. Even if you own the PS4 version along with all the DLC you won’t be entitled to a free upgrade. 505 said it wasn’t technically impossible for current-gen owners to get the free upgrade but then mistakenly upgraded some PS4 editions.
Cyberpunk 2077 owners will be getting a free next-gen patch after launch, CD Projekt Red has confirmed. Cyberpunk 2077 will get a boost in performance once the PS5 launches, but you’ll have to wait until 2021 for a fully-fledged patch that will take full advantage of the improved hardware.
Staying with CD Projekt Red, The Witcher III will get a dedicated PS5 edition for free if you own the PS4 version. It will be available sometime in 2021.
Destiny 2, Dirt 5 and DOOM Eternal -recently added to GamePass- will all be getting free patches to take advantage of the more powerful hardware. Dirt 5 will offer 120fps at 4K.
While Far Cry 6 won’t be released until March 2021, it has been confirmed that all Ubisoft titles will be getting free upgrades to next-gen. This includes Immortals Fenyx Rising and Watch Dogs Legion.
Only Digital owners of Hitman III will be able to take advantage of a free PS5 upgrade. If you have the PS4 disc copy, you won’t be able to get a free upgrade, so bear that in mind.
Horizon Fobidden West and Sackboy: A Big Adventure will both be available for both PS4 and PS5 and Sony have confirmed they are both on the free upgrade list.
EA being EA has revealed that their games will get free next-gen upgrades but there is a time limit. FIFA 21 owners can avail of PS5 upgrades for free until FIFA 22 releases. The same policy applies to Madden 21.
Crystal Dynamics’ The Avengers will take advantage of the PS5 hardware at launch. There will be multiple modes including dynamic 4K 60fps and native 4K 30fps.
Spider-Man Miles Morales will be a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5. The Miles Morales Ultimate edition on PS5 includes the remastered edition of Marvels Spider-Man.
PS4 owners of NBA 2K21 can avail of free next-gen version, but only if you buy the Mamba Forever edition of NBA 2K21. Maybe it’d be best to just buy the PS5 version.
And there we have it. A pretty hefty list of the free PS4 to PS5 upgrades you can look forward to. No doubt I’m missing a few titles but it’s great to see a lot of developers are giving players free upgrades to PS5. Long may it continue.
