The Walking Dead has had its fair share of video game outings over the years. Now, developer Odaclick Game Studio is taking things in a rather different direction with The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival, a side-scrolling action game that sees you punching, shooting and slicing your way through hordes of walkers.
Set during the All Out War storyline from the TV series, the game sees Rick Grimes and his fellow survivors going up against Negan and the Saviours, with familiar locations such as Alexandria, Hilltop and the Sanctuary making an appearance along the way.
Streets. Survival. Simple as.
Rather than trying to deliver another huge open-world adventure, Streets of Survival keeps things simple. You move through each stage, taking on a mix of walkers and human enemies, using any weapons you can get your hands on, including melee weapons and firearms, to get the job done.

You can play as Rick, Daryl Dixon and Michonne, each bringing their own weapons and abilities to the fight. Negan can also be unlocked once you complete the campaign.
It’s a nice touch for fans of the show. Especially when you get your hands on Lucille and start dishing out some old-fashioned punishment.

The familiar faces and locations do a good job of capturing the feel of the TV show, but the combat itself is a little basic when compared to similar titles like Streets of Rage or Shinobi. There are combos and specials, but the limited moveset means the game can get a bit repetitive after a while. On top of this, the controls don’t always feel particularly sharp.
Beyond bashing the brain-dead to a pulp, there are a few additional objectives to complete. There are also collectibles and simple puzzles to break up the action. A skill tree also gives you the chance to improve your characters as you progress. It adds a little extra depth to what could otherwise have been very straightforward stuff.

The biggest issue the game has is that it is fairly short. You’ll probably see most of what Streets of Survival has to offer in just a few hours. Sure, there are reasons to return and try different characters, but it’s a shame there isn’t a little more meat on its bones, so to speak. Especially when The Walking Dead universe has so much potential for this kind of game.
The Resembling Dead
Visually, the pixel-art characters are nicely done, with Rick, Daryl and Michonne all instantly recognisable, while the familiar locations help bring the world to life.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival is a decent little action game that fans of the show and the genre should enjoy, but its repetitive combat and short campaign hold it back from ever quite reaching the heights of the franchise’s better gaming outings.
