Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition review – Puzzle Restored

Everyone loves a match-3 puzzler. It’s a simple yet satisfying gameplay loop with that irresistible “one more go” feeling baked in. Cult classic Puzzle Quest from 2007 took that winning formula and blended it with turn-based RPG mechanics to create something fresh and distinctive for its time. Fast forward 18 years, and Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition has arrived.

This remaster bundles all previous DLC into one package and introduces a new playable class: the Swordmaster. There’s something for everyone. Newcomers get the best version of the game, while long-time fans receive a few extras to draw them back in.

Same Universe

The story unfolds in the same universe as Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. You begin by choosing a class and finding your footing, while reports of undead sightings start to surface.

You’re tasked with uncovering what’s going on and how it affects the kingdom. The narrative is serviceable but mostly a straightforward journey lacking real depth.

It’s not helped by the absence of voice acting. Given the game’s age and the fact it’s a remaster, relying solely on text boxes feels underwhelming, especially since the visuals aren’t demanding.

Still, it’s all about gameplay over story. Let’s be honest, the RPG match-3 mechanics are the real draw here. Things start off simply. You match elemental tiles, earth, fire, water, and lightning—alongside coins, stars, and skulls.

Coins earn gold, stars grant XP, and skulls deal direct damage. Matching elemental tiles stores energy, which lets you cast spells or perform special attacks once you’ve banked enough.

On the RPG side, you can level up, equip or forge items, learn spells (sometimes by capturing enemies), and recruit companions to aid you. It gets more engaging when you upgrade your home base and take on side quests. However, these quickly become repetitive as you fight the same enemies again and again.

Hard Puzzling

One frustrating aspect is the difficulty. It often feels like the odds are always stacked against you. From damage output to tile drops, the game can feel unfairly punishing.

Characters PQ story lore

As the Immortal Edition, this version includes all previously released DLC plus new content. The Revenge of the Plague Lord and Attack of the Golem Lord packs are integrated into the main game, making it feel like a complete experience.

Visually, Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition is fine. The art style is simple but clean, crisp, and easy to read, so there’s little to complain about.

Puzzle Quest was never going to be a Game of the Year contender, but this remaster offers hours of gameplay at a fair price. It should satisfy fans and anyone craving a match-3 puzzler with a bit more depth.
