Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that they have now sold over 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles. In a statement thanking fans as much as sharing news of the platform’s success since its release in November 2020, SIE CEO Jim Ryan revealed that the milestone was passed in July 2023.

SIE chief Ryan cited “unprecedented challenges” that arose from the COVID pandemic. He hailed Sony’s teams and their partners in delivering the console on time. Ryan also acknowledged the difficulties in supplying PlayStation 5 consoles with supply chains under pressure during the worst days of the pandemic.
Pent-Up Demand for PS5
Jim Ryan continued that “pent-up demand” was now being met as sales surged past the 40 million mark this summer. He added that there are now over 2,500 games available for the platform with huge releases adding to the demand for PS5.
Titles like Street Fighter VI, Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XVI were cited, in particular, as driving demand in 2023.
PlayStation 5 Community Top 50 Games
And with the news of the 40million milestone, SIE also revealed the 50 best titles for the platform. The Top 50 list, voted for by the PlayStation community, features a broad selection. The list features some of gaming’s biggest AAA multiplatform names, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Hogwarts Legacy.
The list also features a healthy selection of PlayStation exclusive titles, like Returnal, Spider-Man Miles Morales and The Last of Us – Part I.
