Everyone who has released an electronic item or two has gotten in on the wireless earphones game so it was only a matter of time before we got something like Google Pixel Buds. Featuring Google’s signature two-tone and minimalist design, Pixel Buds are priced €199/£159 with replacement pieces available from day one.
Striking Design
Unlike Airpods or FreeBuds 3 series, Pixel Buds are designed to sit flush in the ear rather than hanging out. The silicone tips and rubber stabilising nub aim to provide a secure fit. We’re currently reviewing Pixel Buds and they definitely stay put. The buds are ported though, just enough to let a little of the outside world in so you don’t walk in front of a bus.
On first impression, the buds seem tiny – smaller than any in-ear wireless device I have reviewed. Thankfully, Google Pixel Buds have an upfront replacement pricing system for the inevitable loss of case or bud. Replacing them will set you back €70 per component – case or individual bud.
The relatively large flat space on the outside of each bud has more functionality than you would expect. Users can change volume, track or open Google Voice Assist with a flick or a few taps. Google Pixel Buds contain 1.2mm drivers so they should be able to compete, aurally, with their market mates.
Stamina Boast
Despite their size, the buds can boast impressive stamina with five hours per charge in the little buds that could and a total of 24 with the charging case. Two hours of playback can be had from just a ten minute rest in the charging case. The package charges via USB Type-C but also comes with Qi wireless charging.
