Red Hook Studios has unveiled a substantial update for Darkest Dungeon II. This update, now available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, introduces two major additions: a free game mode called Kingdoms and a paid DLC titled Inhuman Bondage. These enhancements promise to deepen the game’s already rich, gothic horror experience.
Red Hook Studios Unveils Major Update – Kingdoms: A New Free Game Mode
Kingdoms represents a bold reimagining of Darkest Dungeon II’s core gameplay. This free mode challenges players to defend not just their heroes, but an entire realm and its network of inns against waves of formidable enemies. The first of three planned adventure modules, “Hunger of the Beast Clan,” introduces players to savage beastmen and other menacing factions.

This fresh approach offers a distinct experience from the original Confessions mode, emphasizing strategic resource management and territorial control alongside the series’ trademark character development and combat.

Inhuman Bondage: Paid DLC
The Inhuman Bondage DLC significantly expands Darkest Dungeon II’s content. At its core is The Catacombs, a treacherous new mini-region that plunges players into claustrophobic, underground corridors. Here, a corrosive, oozing threat lurks in the shadows, presenting both grave danger and the promise of powerful rewards. This high-risk, high-reward area introduces new enemies and items, challenging players in both the Confessions and Kingdoms modes.
A highlight of the DLC is the return of The Abomination, a fan-favorite hero from the original Darkest Dungeon. This complex character makes a grand re-entrance with unique mechanics, trinkets, and signature items. Players can explore The Abomination’s backstory through a fully voiced origin tale, complete with playable flashback encounters. The hero’s inclusion adds a new layer of strategy and narrative depth to the game.

Future Plans
While the update is currently exclusive to PlayStation platforms, Red Hook Studios has confirmed that Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch users can look forward to these additions in the near future. The studio has also hinted at two more adventure modules planned for release later in 2025, ensuring a steady stream of content to keep the Darkest Dungeon II experience fresh and challenging.
