So much for 2020 being the year of PS4. There’s a very real possibility that the last AAA game we get this year will be Final Fantasy VII Remake due to these new delays. That’s because Sony Interactive Entertainment tweeted out yesterday that due to the extraordinary circumstances enveloping the globe, they would have to delay The Last Of Us Part II and Iron Man VR ‘until further notice’. This latest round of PS4 game delays is hardly Sony’s fault, of course. This situation goes far beyond video games.
It’s just disappointing that those devs who have been working so hard for the last few years won’t get to see their finished product out in the wild.
The Last of Us II was originally slated to release at the end of May after being pushed back from its original February release.
Now, due to Covid19 sweeping across the globe, PlayStation isn’t confident in being able to supply the required number of physical copies.
The vast majority of games are manufactured on discs in China, and factories have not yet come back to full production.
Sony also said that they had no further delays to reports at this time but they would keep us updated. Naughty Dog also released a statement on their social media channels confirming the delay
In it, they said: ‘even with us finishing the game, we were faced with the reality that due to logistics beyond our control, we couldn’t launch The Last of Us Part II to our satisfaction.’
You’d have to raise serious doubts on whether Ghost of Tsushima, slated for June 26 release, will make that deadline. After a slow 2019 by PlayStation 4 standards, 2020 was meant to be the glorious final year for the PS4.
Priority for PS5?
Now serious questions have to be asked as to whether The Last Of Us Part II and even Ghost of Tsushima will be pushed to become PS5 launch titles.
Seeing how Xbox seems to have a power advantage with the Series X, one way to counter that would be to have a launch line up with both The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima.
Financially, it wouldn’t make sense in the short term to have Ghost and The Last of Us Part II launch only on PS5. Over 105 million PS4 consoles have been sold since it released back in 2013, so not having it launch on that platform would be a ‘PS3 launch price’ level of stupidity.
What would you like to see happen? Should Sony delay both until the PS5 launches in Holiday 2020? Let us know in the comments.
