Ubisoft has announced a partnership with Lucasfilm Games to develop an open-world game based in the Star Wars universe.
According to Wired, Lucasfilm Games has allegedly decided to end the exclusivity deal with EA, which was due to expire in 2023, early and are now approaching other publishers.
Ubisoft Massive will be the studio developing this unnamed Star Wars title. They’re the studio behind The Division 2, with Creative Director, Julian Gerighty taking lead on the development.
Ubisoft’s in-house Snowdrop engine will be used on this title and is the same engine that was used on the award-winning The Division 2. So far, very little is known about this new project like what timeline it will take place in.
It brings an end to the less than stellar partnership that EA had with Star Wars which started in 2013 and was due to finish in 2023. In total, 4 Star Wars games have been released in the last 7 years. Two Battlefront titles, Jedi: Fallen Order and most recently Star Wars Squadrons. EA has also cancelled development on at least 3 different Star Wars games that time.
According to the Wired article, EA will continue to develop Star Wars games but they won’t have exclusive rights to the IP. I’m sure this will come as a relief to many gamers out there.
On Monday, the Lucasfilm Games label was revealed which will feature on all Star Wars games as well as other IP. Then on Tuesday, Bethesda announced that Machine Games was working with Lucasfilm Games to develop an Indiana Jones game.
With this title years away, you’d expect and hope that it will be exclusive to PS5 and Series X/S so it can take full advantage of the powerful hardware. Are you excited about the end to the exclusivity deal? What time line would you ant this new Star Wars game to take place in? Let us know in the comments below.
