Pokémon: The Isle of Armor – The Kubfu/Urshifu Journey

Following my exploits in Pokémon: The Isle of Armor expansion so far, Kubfu recently joined my party. For a legendary/mythical Pokémon, Kubfu is quite shy and reminiscent of ‘Gohan’ from the beginning of ‘DragonBall Z’. It’s up to players to help Kubfu build a bond with its new trainer to attempt the next trial that Master Mustard and the Armor Dojo has in store.

Pokémon: The Isle of Armor

This mission takes players on a sightseeing trip around the Isle of Armor which acts as a bonding moment with little Kubfu, no need for help items to help move things along. After visiting the four sights, the game prompts players to head back to Colonel… I mean Master Mustard to report on the blossoming bromance.

A Finale of Sorts

Serving as the games story finalé, players will then have to level Kubfu up to at least level 70 to defeat the trainers in the Tower of Water or Darkness. As players can only choose one, the end result is Kubfu’s evolution having a special Water or Dark-type move respectively.

Leveling up at this point for many returning players won’t be an issue. If avatars aren’t lugging around a metric tonne of XP candies by now from raids, well, I’d be quite surprised. A quick hint, making Kubfu learn ‘Zen Headbutt’ before attempting the tower trail will give players a great type advantage. At least in the water tower anyway.

Upon defeating the five trainers, none other than Master Mustard awaits at the top. Sporting a geared up look and apart new-found athleticism, it’s easy to see why Honey sticks around. Defeating the big ‘M’ allows players to read their chosen towers scroll that evolved Kubfu into the mighty Urshifu. I love evolving legendaries.

Striking Power

My Urshifu also learned the special move ‘Surging Strikes’ which deals 25 damage, three times in one go. It’s more effective than it initially looks. Especially when considering the move turns into an exclusive G-Max move. Which brings me to the next task of the game.

Players will find out that it’s possible to give Urshifu a Gigantamax form by drinking G-Max Soup along with something sweet. The wise Master Mustard has completely forgotten what that certain ingredient is. Don’t worry, our original rival ‘Hop’ travels over to the Isle of Armor for some convenient research task. Hop joins you as you travel the Isle of Armor finding this secret ingredient.

After a good dose of trial and error, and a surprise Dynamax battle against a wild ‘Vespiqueen’, players will discover the Pokémons honey is the missing secret ingredient to the special G-Max soup Urshifyu needs. My Urshifu learned the special G-Max move ‘Rapid Flow’, which is a killer move and type advantage if used correctly. The only issue was that I used the Max Mushrooms necessary to make a G-Max Soup for another Pokémon…

G-Max Mushrooms spawn in up to six locations at a time in all caves of the map and also around the wetlands. As Austin John points out in one of his many amazingly informative videos, it takes three successful Max Raid Battles to spawn a single Max Mushroom.

Players will need to complete 18 battles to spawn all six, which sounds daunting. But here’s a solution: Players should fly back to the Galar wildlands to buy Wishing Pieces, this will allow protagonists to farm one to three-star raids for some easy G-Max Mushroom farming.

Pokémon: The Isle of Armor Urshifu

Now that I’ve reached the end of the Isle of Armor’s story, I can’t wait to collect the 100 returning Pokémon in-game and complete some more tasks. There’s still more to come on the subject, stay tuned for the final installment of my review playthrough of the Isle of Armor.
