Virgin Media have just announced that 1Gb broadband is being made available from today for all Virgin Media customers.
Approximately 98% of premises across the country will able to upgrade to super-fast 1Gb broadband.
“We’re not announcing plans or ambitions or focusing on limited areas,” said Paul Higgins, Vice President of Commercial at Virgin Media.
“Instead, from today, we’re providing lightning-fast broadband connectivity across the country on our gigabit network.”
The new service is available immediately to both existing and new customers alike.
Virgin Media has invested over €1 billion in upgrading their system to join Eir and Siro in providing 1Gb broadband in Ireland.
Before launching this new service, Virgin Media offered speeds of 250mbps and 500mbps. There has been high uptake of their 500mbps offering and Virgin Media expects something similar for the 1Gb offering.
Since COVID 19 forced hundreds of thousands of people to work from home, Virgin Media has seen a 40% rise in data usage.
For existing customers, the 1Gb service will cost €85 per month on a 12-month contract, with new customers paying €60 for the first 6 months.
The 1Gb speeds will certainly come in handy for when the PS5 and Xbox Series X launch this Christmas.
