Games fall into two main groups I would say. Those which are all about a tale that hooks you and pulls you through it. And those that have an interesting and addictive gameplay loop with that just one-more-go vibe. Post Void by Swedish studio YCJY Games very much falls into the second group of games.

A game where any sort of tale it’s trying to tell you instantly takes a back seat; Post Void is all about the gameplay.
First-Person Tripper
Post Void is an FPS but with a twist. That being, you carry the head of an idol in your left hand which is linked to your health. Each level starts with the idol’s head full of a bright yellow questionable liquid that starts to drain.
Once all the yellow juice is gone from that noggin, you’re dead. But there is hope.
Each time you kill, the head gets a bit more juice back. So, to stay upright and moving you are going to have to blast everything that moves as quickly as you can. Post Void features this hook at the centre the gameplay.
It isn’t a shooter about holding back and lining up that perfect shot. Post Void is all about being aggressive and pushing forward at all costs.
First-Person Dier
As you may expect, death is common. Maybe even more common than in this week’s hottest new Souls-like, because it’s one and your run is done.
Give it time and you’ll start to learn how to move in the world. You can slide, and jump to win back precious seconds by keeping your momentum going. Once mastered, Post Void can be very smooth and nearly hypnotic at times.
Make it to the end of the level and you earn yourself an unlock or two. You can unlock new weaponry as you go, upping your firepower for the next challenge. Though interestingly the game isn’t that long. However, it’s a tough challenge and seeing the credits will take longer than you’d think.
Bold and Heady Art
Visually, Post Void is psychedelic – bright, flashy, over the top. The image is artistically twisted and warped with a pixel art-style that makes me feel uncomfortable looking at it.
The audio also feeds into this power trip. Post Void‘s score is unrelenting and gets you fired up for each level with its thrash rock beats grinding away in the background.

Post Void is a frantic and twisted fever dream of a game, that at its core is a solid twitch shooter that takes pure joy in kicking you in the nuts and sending you back to the start to do it all over again.
If you’re an FPS fan or looking for something a bit different to break up your more serious Warzone and Apex session, Post Void is worth a look. Just beware that it’s the digital equivalent of a kick in the head, in a lot of ways.
