Ninja Gaiden series first started kicking players rear ends back in 1988. The Xbox era would see the series become a mainstay in the hack and slash genre. This breakout era would spawn three titles that would, for the next 21 years, be required texts for the genre. And so, news that Team Ninja and PlatinumGames were teaming up for the fourth game in the 3D era was more than welcome. And to top off that piece of wonderful news, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black was announced and dropped that same day.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is much more than a straight port of the acclaimed 2008 game. This 2025 version is part-remaster, part-remake, with a revamp on all fronts. The biggest change, of course, is in the game’s visuals, now running on Unreal Engine 5.
Hardcore fans can look at Black as being the core of Ninja Gaiden 2 with elements from Ninja Gaiden Sigma blended in. There are also several new features that attempt to make this the definite experience. And while the whole package fails to achieve ‘definitive’ status, it gets very close.
Back in Black
You’re back as Ryu Hayabusa, master ninja and descendant of the Dragon Ninja lineage. and, for now, wielder of the Dragon Sword. The story picks up one year after Ninja Gaiden as master blacksmith Muramasa is setting up shop in Tokyo. A CIA agent called Sonia gets herself kidnapped by the Black Spider Ninja Clan while looking for Ryu.
Ryu then has to go looking for Sonia, who he seemingly believes is inside one of the hundreds of foot soldiers now chasing him. After slicing open a dozen or so with no sign of Sonia, he at least uncovers why Sonia was taken. After listening instead of slicing, he also hears of the four greater fiends and how an ancient statue stolen from the Hayabusa village is the key.

It’s a little melodramatic at times, but it does the job of you keeping engaged from one spectacle to the next. And, thanks to the visual upgrade, the cutscenes have never looked this good.
The gorgeous cutscenes are matched by the gameplay visuals, and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black looks nothing short stunning at times. Lighting and shadows truly pop, while the re-rendered characters teem with life and detail.
Sharp as a Blade
You aren’t playing Ninja Gaiden 2 Black for the tale though, are you?
The razor-sharp, lighting-fast combat is here in all of its visceral and thrilling glory. Regardless of the weapon you wield from your healthy arsenal, every slice, rip or slash feels right. Swords, staffs, claw, whatever you wield, all have a tangible weight and impact that elevates the whole fighting experience.

Each weapon also has a rhythm you need to play along to in order to match the required playstyle. Your main goal from moment is to combo devastating attacks, punctuated by well-timed blocks, into a jaw-dropping symphony of carnage.

This conduction of destruction is not easy to master, however. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black retains its legendary challenge, but it also keeps it fair. Most, if not all, deaths, will be down to a timing or skill issue. Enemies just don’t give you any quarter on this battlefield. They attack relentlessly with one goal; to break your guard and kill you.
To a point that when you have literally carved up an enemy, they are still a threat if not truly dispatched. They can, and will, leap onto you with an explosive kunai, often to lethal effect. This endless onslaught, along with your limited health until a set save point, really ups the challenge. It’s worth noting that 2025 Ninja Gaiden 2 Black‘s enemies are more staged in their attacks than in the original. On the flip side, they do have more health.
Addition to Attrition
The Black edition also adds in a few new features. Three additional playable characters, Momiji, Ayane, and Rachel do a lot for the package overall. It also includes ‘hero play style’ mode which is a sort of easy, or beginner, mode – that provides automatic support during fights, making it more accessible for newcomers who are just building their skills.
That said there are some features also missing from the game that hardcore fans may miss, such as all online modes; like co-op, Ninja Race, Test of Valor and Ninja Cinema are all missing too. Tag mission is still here, though you’ll have to team up with an NPC this time around.

While these losses are minor, the missing content ultimately stops this from being the definitive edition of the game. However, beyond the hardcore, I honestly doubt anyone will give the missing stuff more than a second thought.
Royal Assassin
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is visually stunning with the aforementioned move to Unreal Engine 5 paying off in this respect. Even the gore elements, like dismemberment and blood spatters, have been remastered. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black feels that bit more visceral than its parent title. Sound is also top tier with an epic soundtrack backed up by cheesy at times, but solid voice acting.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a welcome addition to the family as it is hands down the best way to play Team Ninjas classic. The hardcore may all agree that it’s not quite a remake due to the tweaks and Sigma features, but everyone else can (and should) accept the changes and enjoy.

Take it for what it is and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black delivers a challenging but rewarding hack and slash title that lives up to its lineage. It’s still a game that holds no punches, even if you ask it teach you the ropes. It doesn’t meet you halfway, but ensures that it’s worth the stretch to clear its hurdles.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black offers incredible depth of combat to those brave (and persistent) enough to accept its challenge, and it serves as the perfect appetizer to enjoy before Ninja Gaiden 4 releases later this year.
