The Future of Gaming is here! June has historically been the month for videogame news and with this year’s E3 cancelled Sony are still soldiering ahead with their plans to unveil the PlayStation 5.
Originally slated for June 4th, Sony deferred their next-generation showcase in response to the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests happening across the US. Jim Ryan, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) highlighting the need to “allow more important voices to be heard”.
Titled The Future of Gaming, a digital showcase of games coming to their next-gen console will go live tomorrow from 9 pm. Sony’s PS5 event is expected to last a little over an hour.
Unlike Microsoft’s more homely webcam-in-the-livingroom Xbox Series X events, tomorrow’s PS5 event will be a polished, pre-recorded show and will be broadcast in 1080p at 30 frames per second. However, Sony state the majority of the trailers shown will be released in 4K on YouTube after the event.
Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications said on the PlayStation Blog it was a conscious decision that “eased the show’s production process during a time when many of our team and developers are working from home.”
Speaking on Kinda Funny Games Daily, Alanah Pearce said that “Sony has tried to do presentations already this year, and I know this from developers who were supposed to be part of those presentations but didn’t because for some reason, somewhere in the Sony hierarchy they were very obsessed with the idea of having a very, very professional stream, rather than something previously recorded.”
With all this effort, Sony are encouraging viewers to wear headphones while watching the broadcast, as there will be “some cool audio work in the show, and it might be harder to appreciate if it’s pumped through your phone or laptop speakers.” Not surprising coming from the people that had a live orchestra score their E3 presentation in 2016.
While tomorrow’s event has been touted as a presentation of the games coming to the PS5, it isn’t clear if we will get a look at the actual hardware they will be running on. Sony released the images of the DualSense controller in April for fear of it leaking after being shared with 3rd party developers.
So, with their eyes set firmly on a holiday release and with problems getting people out to China to oversee the console’s production, we might just get a sneak peek at the box as the one more thing of the presentation.
It’s understood that Sony took note of Xbox’s lacklustre showing in May where fans were underwhelmed with a trailer for Assassins Creed: Valhalla in place of gameplay. I think it’s safe to say they won’t make the same mistake.
While it’s likely that there will be a number of previously unannounced games shown tomorrow, here’s a list of the games we know are coming to the PS5, so far that may feature:
